So I know it only looks like I update this blog when I want things (i.e my birthday list and now my christmas list) but I promise I will put up everything on Fall Semester after I finish my finals (December 16).
In the mean time...here's my christmas list...
Not exactly Michael Kors...but a nice fashion watch perhaps?
Pretty Please? I think it's time for a new one...
Cute toiletry case
Single serve blender. For smoothies. Promise! Haha
So I've been meaning to post this for a while, the week of my birthday isn't exactly the most opportune time to do this BUT...I was hoping gifts could be left for Thanksgiving, perhaps? I don't have a whole lot more room up here in this closet-of-a-dorm room for much more..just a thought. Here goes the list :)
$$ towards Sorel and/pr LL Bean and/or any other Snow boots of this style. Mom, I could use help shoppin' for some :)
This semester I am co-teaching a University 101 class that is a short, one credit hour class that meets once a week to discuss different issues that may arise during the transition into college such as time management, multiculturalism, peer pressure, stress management, the Jesuit mission, health and wellness, etc. My most favorite part so far has been our class outing. My advisor and I decided to take the class to the Fox theater, just a block off campus, to take a tour of it! The tour was SO COOL! We learned about it's history and architecture and all the shows that had come through over the years. One of the first thing's the tour guide mentioned was the use of "ghost lamps". Since theater in general is full of superstitions, they always keep on these "ghost lamps" so that the spirits think they are never alone. If they were to be left alone and neglected, who knows what they would do to the performances!
Also, another interesting superstition was the elephants on the carpet. Through out the whole theater, there are elephants with their trunks pointing up, a symbol for good luck, and every single one has their trunk raised toward the stage. No matter where you are, even in the bathroom, the elephants will point you back to the stage!
Backstage was quite a sight to see! Every wall is covered with graffiti, signatures, and murals of the past performers and plays that have come through the Fox. I could have stayed in there for hours reading all the writing and trying to find performers I know.
JONAS BROTHERS!
We ended the day with a nice dinner at the italian restaurant right by campus, Vitos. I had so much fun in fact, I brought my dad back for a tour the next weekend while he was visiting for parent's weekend.
BID DAY 2011 welcomed 60 brand new babies into Delta Gamma. After "greeting" them by cheering and jumping up and down and hugging and smiling and screaming, we took our annual picture in front of the John Cook school of business. It was so exciting, and surreal, to see all their smiling faces and reminiscing on my Bid Day a year ago. I had absolutely no idea what I was getting myself into, or how rewarding it would be (even after only 12 months!) After the "photoshoot"we headed out to the bowling alley and had pizza, mingled, and cosmic bowled all afternoon. Here are some pictures from the festivities that day:
Recruitment is finally here!!
Yes, it is that time of year when the girls dress up and prance from party to party, talking to countless girls in a speed dating like fashion, trying to decide where they must feel "at home". And this year, I get to be on the other side of the process, on the inside. I cannot believe it was one year ago, Monday that I myself received a bid from Delta Gamma! Last week was full of seemingly endless practices (think 5pm-11pm) and shameless advertising of our letters around campus via adorable, matching tank tops and tshirts.
My favorite outfit of the week.
Of course those are anchors on my shorts!
All the clapping, smiling, cheering, mock conversations, and sisterly bonding has led up to these next few days of formal recruitment. Formal recruitment started Friday night and will wrap up on Sunday morning when we will welcome our new Delta Gamma babies. I was so nervous yesterday evening before the first party, but by the end of the night I really didn't want it to end. After all the potential new members had gone home, we stayed around and danced and danced...and danced, gotta love impromptu dance parties with your sissies!
"The Bernie" a new dance craze hittin' the...Midwest?
Another crowd pleaser..."the wobble"
Dancing to the Backstreet Boys..THROWBACKK!!
Whippin' their hair
Loved these white sweaters!! So classy :)
ALSO: Here are a few pictures from a sisterhood event we had in Forest Park last weekend on Labor Day. It was so nice to eat lunch and just nap in the sun with the girls. Unfortunately, the sprinklers came on and broke up the party, haha! It was quite a scene...
ORIFLAMME: After 3 days of training, which was actually a lot of fun, came the dreaded...MOVE IN DAY(s). Wednesday morning, August 24th, 8:00am to 6:00pm our team in the orange shirts were slamming the new freshmen and their families with a wall of enthusiasm as soon as they entered the parking lot! And kept up the excitement as we lugged boxes, bags, tvs, futons, and mini fridges up and down flights of stairs and into their new "home". It was "fun"...for the first 15 minutes. Not gunna lie, the enthusiasm was indeed fabricated and I was dying a little bit inside every time I had to walk up to the fifth floor of the dorm building, from basement level (not to mention, we were under heat advisory and the heat index was between 107 and 115 all day).
Stephanie (Incarnate Word) and Jacob (Central Catholic) on move-in day
How many Oriflamme members can we fit in a room?!
Somehow I made it through the day and onto the next...Thursday was much nicer weather and we only had to work 8:00-1:00! That night began the festivities of Welcome Week, a time when the freshmen have the campus to their selves and awesome activities coordinated for them. Here are a few pictures from different events:
Jacob (Central Catholic) and Amy (St. Matthew) and me at the square dance
Me and a seemingly random freshman. NOPE! Turns out his older sister is a DG in my chapter!
My DG sister, Victoria, and I serving midnight breakfast
My DG sister, Natalie, and friend, Allie, at the Grand Street Party
Carnival games at the Grand Street Party
Yes! There was a balloon artist
And then there was the always anticipated: Spirit Competition. This always occurs at the first men's soccer game on SLU's field. All the floors get dressed, painted, and fired up with the intention of winning the spirit award which was judged through out the first half. My floor, 10G, had such a creative theme: 5C's funeral service (5C has been the reigning champions of the spirit competition for 4 or 5 years now). We had a choir, a trumpet player, a preacher, and the clergy. When we got to the stadium, the freshmen looked amazing! Although our floor did not win the spirit competition, 5C didn't either...and that's all anyone really cared about anyways, haha.
While the first half against Louisville was close (1-1) I was more concerned with what was coming next: the half time show. Now a handful of my friends and family members were aware of this, but let me break it down for those who didn't hear...mid-summer I received an e-mail from the directors of Oriflamme announcing that WE would be the halftime entertainment in the form of a flash mob. We were required to learn the dance and practice/PERFECT it with the school dance team. Since I am almost sure the dance team picked out the song, this dance was not made for a beginner dancer (which was what we all were), this routine was for the pros! In fact here is the exact dance we did IN the official music video:
at 3:35 the actual dance starts
The time had finally come and the music started and we ran onto the field and within 3 minutes, it was over with, haha! We were so excited once we had pulled it off and all the practice sessions really did pay off! Here's a (very) low quality video of the routine, after everyone had gotten onto the field:
Here is a better quality video, however I think you may have to be logged into Facebook to view it.
P.S. I am in the line to the right of center field in the VERY back, behind a girl in a pink tutu. When the lines split up, I am dancing literally RIGHT in front of the Billiken. Enjoy
